Dandenong Ranges Parks

The Dandenong Ranges is home to some of Victoria’s most scenic parks, offering visitors beautiful picnic grounds, walking trails, gardens, forests, and recreational areas surrounded by towering mountain ash trees and lush fern gullies. Located just east of Melbourne, the region’s cool-climate environment creates the perfect setting for outdoor activities and relaxing nature escapes.

From large recreational reserves to peaceful forest parks, the Dandenong Ranges attracts families, hikers, photographers, and tourists year-round.

One of the most popular destinations in the region is Emerald Lake Park. This expansive park is a favourite for both locals and tourists thanks to its picturesque lake, walking tracks, picnic facilities, playgrounds, and open parklands. Families often spend entire days here enjoying paddleboats, barbecues, and lakeside walks beneath the towering trees.

The park is also closely connected to the famous Puffing Billy Railway, with the Lakeside Visitor Centre attracting large numbers of visitors year-round. The combination of steam trains, scenic landscapes, and recreational facilities makes Emerald Lake Park one of the standout attractions in the Dandenong Ranges.

Another iconic location is the Dandenong Ranges National Park. Covering large sections of the mountain range, the national park contains dense forests, fern gullies, picnic grounds, waterfalls, and some of Victoria’s most popular walking tracks. Visitors can explore peaceful forest trails while spotting native birds such as lyrebirds, cockatoos, rosellas, and kookaburras.

Popular sections of the park include the 1000 Steps Kokoda Track Memorial Walk, Sherbrooke Forest, and Olinda Falls.

Birdsland Reserve is another favourite park within the Dandenong Ranges. This peaceful reserve features lakes, wetlands, open grasslands, bushwalking trails, and abundant native wildlife. The reserve is particularly popular with birdwatchers and families seeking a quieter nature experience away from the busier tourist areas. Kangaroos, ducks, waterbirds, and native bushland species are commonly seen throughout the reserve.

The beautiful Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens also functions as one of the region’s most visited parklands. Known for its ornamental lake, historic boathouse, bridges, and colourful seasonal foliage, the gardens provide a peaceful environment for photography, picnics, and leisurely walks. During autumn, the park becomes especially popular as vibrant red, orange, and yellow leaves surround the lake and pathways.

Further throughout the region, parks such as RJ Hamer Arboretum and George Tindale Memorial Gardens offer scenic walking trails, towering trees, and panoramic views of the Yarra Valley and the Melbourne skyline.

Many visitors combine several parks into a single day trip while exploring the villages of Olinda, Sassafras, and Belgrave.

Whether you are looking for hiking trails, family picnic spots, wildlife encounters, or peaceful natural scenery, the parks of the Dandenong Ranges provide some of the most relaxing and picturesque outdoor experiences in Victoria.
