Dandenong Ranges Nature

The Dandenong Ranges is one of Victoria’s most spectacular natural destinations, filled with towering forests, fern gullies, waterfalls, scenic lookouts, and native wildlife. Located less than an hour from Melbourne, the region offers visitors a peaceful escape into cool-climate wilderness while still being easily accessible for day trips and weekend getaways.

Whether you enjoy hiking, photography, birdwatching, or simply relaxing amongst nature, the Dandenong Ranges has countless natural attractions to explore.

Dandenong Ranges Nature, Walks & Hiking Trails, Wildlife & Photography

One of the region’s standout destinations is the Dandenong Ranges National Park. Spanning large sections of the mountain range, the national park is famous for its dense mountain ash forests, towering tree ferns, and scenic walking tracks. Visitors can explore a huge network of trails that pass through fern-filled gullies, picnic grounds, and hidden natural areas. The cool mountain climate and rich forest environment create a peaceful atmosphere throughout the year.

Within the national park, Kokoda Track Memorial Walk, commonly known as the 1000 Steps, is one of Melbourne’s most famous bushwalks. The steep rainforest trail attracts hikers, fitness enthusiasts, and tourists wanting to experience the lush scenery while learning about the Kokoda campaign memorials placed along the route. The walk winds through towering trees and dense ferns, creating one of the most iconic nature experiences in the Dandenong Ranges.

Another popular natural attraction is Sherbrooke Falls. Surrounded by thick forest and walking trails, the falls provide a relaxing nature escape close to the villages of Sherbrooke and Sassafras. The short walking tracks leading to the falls pass through beautiful fern gullies and are particularly scenic after rain, when the water flow is strongest.

The region is also famous for its stunning gardens and forest reserves. Alfred Nicholas Memorial Garden combines ornamental lakes, waterfalls, bridges, and towering exotic trees to create one of the most photographed locations in the Dandenong Ranges. During autumn, the reflections of colourful leaves across the lake attract photographers from across Victoria.

For panoramic scenery, visitors often head to Burkes Lookout and Mount Dandenong Observatory. These elevated lookouts provide sweeping views across Melbourne, Port Phillip Bay, and the surrounding countryside. Sunset is particularly popular, as the city skyline begins to light up in the distance.

Other notable nature attractions throughout the region include Olinda Falls, the tranquil walking trails of Birdsland Reserve, and the beautiful cool-climate landscapes of Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden and RJ Hamer Arboretum (Parks Victoria).

Together, these destinations make the Dandenong Ranges one of the best places in Victoria to experience nature, wildlife, and scenic outdoor adventures.
