Ferntree Gully Quarry Reserve

Ferntree Gully Quarry Reserve is one of the most unique parklands in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges. Located in the suburb of Ferntree Gully, the reserve has been transformed from a former industrial quarry into a scenic recreational space featuring wetlands, walking trails and peaceful natural surroundings.

Today, it serves as both an important environmental habitat and a relaxing destination for locals and visitors exploring the region.

The quarry operated for many decades as a major source of stone used in construction projects across Melbourne. When quarrying eventually ceased, the large excavation site was rehabilitated and carefully landscaped to create a public reserve. The result is a fascinating landscape where steep rock faces surround wetlands, open grassy areas and walking paths that wind through the park.

One of the main features of Ferntree Gully Quarry Reserve is its large wetland system. These wetlands play an important role in managing stormwater while also providing habitat for a wide range of birds and wildlife.

Visitors often spot ducks, herons and other waterbirds feeding or resting along the water’s edge. The wetlands also support native plants that help improve water quality and create a healthy ecosystem within the reserve.

Walking tracks allow visitors to explore the park while enjoying views of the surrounding cliffs and water features. The paths are generally easy and suitable for a relaxing stroll, making the reserve popular with families, dog walkers and people looking for a peaceful place to exercise.

Informational signs throughout the park explain the history of the quarry and the environmental restoration that took place after its closure.

Another appealing aspect of the reserve is its sense of space. The dramatic quarry walls create a unique landscape that feels quite different from the surrounding suburbs. Open lawns and seating areas make it a pleasant location for a short break or picnic while enjoying the natural scenery.

Because of its location near the base of the Dandenong Ranges, the reserve is often included in a broader day trip exploring the area. Visitors may combine a visit with nearby attractions such as national park walking trails, mountain lookouts and the villages further up the ranges.

Ferntree Gully Quarry Reserve stands as a successful example of how an industrial site can be transformed into a valuable public space. Its wetlands, walking trails and restored landscape now provide a peaceful green oasis at the gateway to the Dandenong Ranges.
