Macclesfield

Macclesfield is a suburb located in the Dandenong Ranges, 47 kilometres east from the Melbourne CBD. The suburb is best known for its rich soil that has made it a household name as one of the best producers of flowers and potatoes in Victoria.

Interestingly, the suburb was named after a place with the same name in England following the discovery of gold deposits around the creek in the mid-19th century. Its first post office was opened in 1891 and was eventually closed in 1974, almost a century later.

One of the suburb’s most amazing attractions is the Australian Rainbow Trout Farm. Pack your fishing gear and head down to the lake for a good catch. The Atlantic salmon and the rainbow trout after which the farm is named, are some of the species available. The best part about visiting this farm is that there are gas BBQs, mini-golf and a playground for the kids to make it a fun day out for the whole family.

Due to its rural farm setting, there aren’t any accommodation providers in the township of Macclesfield. However you can find plenty just a few kilometres south in Emerald and Cockatoo, and even more, if you head west into Belgrave, Kallista and Olinda.
