Dandenong Ranges Gardens

The Dandenong Ranges is famous for their breathtaking cool-climate gardens, attracting visitors throughout the year with colourful blooms, towering trees, ornamental lakes, and peaceful walking paths. Located just east of Melbourne, the region’s cooler temperatures and rich volcanic soil create ideal growing conditions for a huge variety of native and exotic plants.

From formal landscaped gardens to natural woodland retreats, the Dandenong Ranges offers some of Victoria’s most beautiful outdoor spaces.

One of the most popular attractions in the region is the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden. Formerly known as the National Rhododendron Gardens, this expansive garden covers more than 40 hectares and features stunning displays of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, daffodils, and cherry blossoms.

Visitors can wander through peaceful walking paths, picnic on the lawns, and enjoy panoramic views across the Yarra Valley. Seasonal colour changes make the garden especially popular during spring and autumn, while the cooler mountain climate provides a refreshing escape during summer.

Located within the botanical garden is the spectacular Chelsea Australian Garden. Inspired by the award-winning Australian garden displayed at the Chelsea Flower Show in London, this modern landscaped space showcases native Australian plants, waterfalls, boardwalks, sculptures, and water-sensitive design. The garden highlights sustainable landscaping while creating a habitat for local birds, frogs, and wildlife.

Another must-visit destination is the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens. Considered one of the most photographed gardens in the Dandenong Ranges, the property is famous for its ornamental lake, historic boathouse, waterfalls, bridges, and towering exotic trees. Established in the 1920s by pharmaceutical magnate Alfred Nicholas, the garden feels almost magical, particularly during autumn when golden ginkgo leaves and vibrant maples surround the lake. The garden’s winding paths and peaceful atmosphere make it a favourite for photographers, picnics, and leisurely walks.

Nearby, the George Tindale Memorial Gardens offers a smaller but equally charming experience. Nestled beneath towering mountain ash trees, the garden features magnolias, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, camellias, and colourful seasonal displays throughout the year. Its intimate setting and quiet atmosphere make it a favourite amongst garden enthusiasts.

The Pirianda Gardens is another hidden gem in the Dandenong Ranges. Designed across steep hillsides and woodland gullies, the garden contains rare and botanically significant trees collected from around the world. During autumn, the changing colours of the deciduous trees create spectacular shades of red, orange, and gold throughout the property.

Together, the gardens of the Dandenong Ranges provide visitors with year-round beauty, peaceful scenery, and some of the finest cool-climate garden experiences in Australia.
