The Dandenong Ranges is packed with activities for visitors of all ages, making it one of Victoria’s most popular day trips and weekend destinations. Whether you are looking for adventure, relaxation, or nature-based activities, the Dandenong Ranges offers something for everyone.

Dandenong Ranges Activities, National Park, Gardens & Mountains Map

One of the most iconic activities in the region is riding the Puffing Billy Railway. This historic steam train journey takes passengers through lush fern gullies, forests, and charming hill towns between Belgrave, Emerald, and Gembrook. Sitting on the open-sided carriages with your legs hanging over the side has become a famous Melbourne tradition, attracting families, tourists, and railway enthusiasts year-round. The surrounding stations also feature cafés, picnic areas, and walking tracks, making the experience a full-day outing.

Nature lovers are spoiled with countless walking trails and gardens throughout the region. The Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden is especially popular in spring and autumn, with colourful flowers, towering trees, lakes, and peaceful walking paths attracting visitors year-round.

Nearby, the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens offers picturesque scenery with its ornamental lake and historic boathouse, while the Sherbrooke Forest is famous for tall mountain ash forests, native birdlife, and shaded walking trails.

For spectacular panoramic views, many visitors head to SkyHigh Mount Dandenong. Located near the summit of Mount Dandenong, this attraction provides sweeping views across Melbourne, Port Phillip Bay, and the surrounding countryside. Visitors can enjoy the gardens, hedge maze, walking tracks, cafés, and lookout areas, particularly at sunset when the city lights begin to glow in the distance.

Adventure activities are also a major drawcard in the Dandenong Ranges. The region offers hiking, mountain biking, tree surfing, abseiling, and outdoor exploration opportunities throughout the forests and national parks.

Trees Adventure Glen Harrow Park is a favourite for families and thrill-seekers, with elevated ropes courses and zip lines set amongst the forest canopy.

Walking enthusiasts also flock to the 1000 Steps Kokoda Track Memorial Walk, one of Melbourne’s most famous fitness and hiking trails.

Beyond the outdoor activities, the villages themselves are attractions. Towns such as Olinda, Sassafras, and Belgrave are filled with antique stores, artisan shops, galleries, cafés, sweet shops, and local markets.

Many visitors simply enjoy wandering through the villages, taking in the cool mountain air and discovering hidden local treasures.
