The grounds are located along the cool waters of the Sassafras Creek, creating a tranquil backdrop for adventure in the mountain ranges. Surrounded by towering Mountain Ash trees and tree ferns, this is the perfect destination for an unforgettable day trip.

The picnic grounds are equipped with picnic tables as well as BBQs and toilets. There is also a carpark located near to the picnic ground. BBQ’s may not be used during total fire ban days and bikes are not permitted along the walking tracks.

There is also a little freshwater spring located here. Cross the little bridge and walk 10 metres and its on your right, at the base of a large Mountain Ash tree.

Birds abound at the picnic grounds and this means that bird watchers will enjoy spending time at the grounds. Some of the common bird species spotted around the grounds include the King Parrots, Crimson Rosellas as well as Kookaburras. On a good day, you may be lucky enough to spot some Lyrebirds in the dense foliage. There are a number of nocturnal animals which may be spotted at dusk. Watch out for ringtail possums, sugar gliders, wombats and wallabies. Goannas may be seen searching for food, so make sure to dispose of waste wisely.

After an amazing picnic, one of the most fun things to do is to walk the tourist track which stretches from Main Street in Sassafras to Telopea Road in the south-east region. The track offers stunning views and a most memorable walking experience as you walk through the gullies and ridges and across the boardwalks.

It is important to note that the grade of the track varies, with some steep sections. In total, the walking track covers a distance of 17 kilometres (one way), but visitors can take a shorter stroll along the trail and come back for a shorter trip.
