The 1 in 20 is one of the most popular climbing routes in the Dandenong Ranges. This route winds up from The Basin area to the scenic Sassafras, providing a gentle climb and one of the most beautiful places for cyclists to push the limits.

The climb begins at the Basin, so cyclists should look out for the 60km speed sign and find the section of the road that is marked with the word “start” in yellow paint. The climb ends at the 50km speed sign located in Sassafras.
The first few kilometres of the climb are easy with a gentle gradient. There are flat sections with a minimal gradient which are good spots to admire the beautiful surroundings as you cruise on by. Most of the climb sits art around 5% gradient for a steady climb to the top. The last 2.4 kilometres of the walk is gentle with minimal changes in the gradient.
1 in 20 stretches for 6.8 kilometres and has an average gradient of 4-5%. Many cyclists use different apps to record their best times, with the time to complete taking anywhere between fifteen minutes and half an hour, depending on your skill level.
