The Dandenong Ranges are one of Victoria’s most scenic destinations, attracting visitors with their cool-climate forests, charming villages and a wide range of tourist attractions. Located just east of Melbourne, the ranges are an ideal escape from the city and offer everything from historic railways and mountain lookouts to gardens, waterfalls and walking trails.

With towering forests, fern-filled gullies and picturesque towns scattered across the hills, the region is packed with attractions that suit families, nature lovers and anyone seeking a relaxing day trip.

Dandenong Ranges Attractions, Things To Do, Points of Interest & Activities




One of the most famous attractions in the region is the historic Puffing Billy Railway. This heritage steam train is one of Australia’s oldest preserved railways and takes passengers on a memorable journey through lush rainforest and tall mountain ash forests.

The train runs between Belgrave, Emerald Lake and Gembrook, allowing visitors to sit in open-sided carriages and enjoy the scenery as the locomotive travels through fern gullies and over historic trestle bridges. For many visitors, a ride on Puffing Billy is the highlight of a trip to the Dandenong Ranges.

Another major drawcard is the expansive Dandenong Ranges National Park, which encompasses much of the mountain range. The park features numerous walking tracks, scenic picnic areas and beautiful forest landscapes filled with native wildlife. Popular spots within the park include the famous 1000 Steps Kokoda Track Memorial Walk, a challenging but rewarding walk that honours Australian soldiers who fought on the Kokoda Track during World War II.

Garden lovers should not miss the spectacular Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden, previously known as the National Rhododendron Gardens. This beautifully landscaped garden is famous for its colourful rhododendrons, azaleas and seasonal displays of flowers. Spring is particularly impressive when the gardens burst into colour, offering sweeping views across the surrounding valleys.

For nature enthusiasts, the picturesque Sherbrooke Falls and nearby Sherbrooke Forest offer tranquil walking trails through dense rainforest. Visitors can enjoy peaceful bushwalks while spotting native birds and wildlife. A short drive away, Grants Picnic Ground is a popular picnic destination surrounded by tall forest and scenic walking tracks.

One of the most unique attractions in the ranges is the tranquil William Ricketts Sanctuary. Set among lush ferns and forest, this open-air sculpture garden features more than 90 clay sculptures that reflect Aboriginal culture and spirituality. The peaceful walking path winds through the forest, allowing visitors to explore the artwork while enjoying the quiet surroundings.

For sweeping views across Melbourne and Port Phillip Bay, visitors often head to SkyHigh Mount Dandenong. Located near the summit of the ranges, this popular lookout offers panoramic views, landscaped gardens, a hedge maze and a café where visitors can relax while taking in the scenery.

With its blend of natural beauty, historic attractions and relaxing mountain villages, the Dandenong Ranges provide an unforgettable experience for visitors.

Whether you are riding a historic steam train, exploring rainforest walking trails or enjoying the views from a mountain lookout, the region offers a wide range of attractions that showcase the best of Victoria’s scenic landscapes.
